Cameron Dorn's Denali Summit

For as long as most of us have known Cameron Dorn, he’s been happiest in the mountains.

From local peaks to expeditions around the world, he’s always been drawn to the challenge, the beauty, and the perspective that mountains offer.

This summer, that lifelong passion led him back to Denali.

Five years after turning around short of the summit, Cameron returned to North America’s highest peak with years of additional experience, deeper wisdom, and the same great respect for the mountain that has always guided him.

Sometimes it’s the wisest decision a climber can make is turning around. The goal is never just to reach the summit—it’s to return home safely, grateful for the opportunity to climb another day.

Climbing Denali again required patience and perspective. At camps, there were long days of waiting, monitoring the weather, sharing meals, reading a good book, laughing through the first season of Ted Lasso, and preparing for the next opportunity to move higher.

When summit day finally arrived, the mountain had one last challenge.

Fresh snow had buried the route markers, leaving the team to travel over markers they couldn’t even see. The guides and teammates with Cameron brought experience, encouragement, and steady judgment when the route wasn’t obvious. Not only did having expert guides cut down drastically on the time it took to get up and down the mountain but in situations like this, their experience and expertise kept everyone moving forward safely.

Eventually, after steadfast positive vibes and one final push, Cameron and company stood on Denali’s summit!

For most, it’s hard to imagine what that moment must have felt like. Gratitude, perhaps more than anything else. Gratitude for the journey, for the people who shared it, and for the years it took to arrive there.

Mountains (and symbolic mountains) have a way of shaping us. Whether it’s a health recovery, a new career, a healthier lifestyle, or a dream we’ve carried for years, the real reward isn’t standing on top.

It’s becoming the kind of person who’s willing to climb, willing to learn, willing to seek guidance, and willing to begin again after disappointment. It’s having the humility to turn around when wisdom calls for it, the courage to come back when the time is right, and the gratitude to appreciate every step along the way.

As Cameron knows, not every climb follows a straight path. Sometimes we pause, reset, or come back a different time.

The mountain will always be there. What defines us is that we keep climbing.
