Much More than Weight Loss: Shannon’s Story

Meet Shannon Shahan at FUJIFILM in Greenwood, SC. For 27 years, she has lived with Crohn’s disease, navigating the challenges of chronic illness while also struggling with her weight for more than a decade. In May 2025, everything changed. After enduring the worst Crohn’s flare of her life—26 hours of relentless pain followed by days of recovery—she reached a turning point. Shannon made one decision that would change the course of her health: I don’t want to live like this anymore.

She turned to the Suitcase of Courage community, where trainers Brett Baker and Tracy Duncan helped her take the first steps. Tracy worked with Shannon to identify the foods that best supported her body and encouraged mindful portions, while Brett helped her simply start moving again through gentle walks and yoga. The Suitcase of Courage gym gave her a supportive place to build healthy habits, stay accountable, and keep moving forward.

What started as a desire to avoid another Crohn’s flare became a complete lifestyle transformation. Over the next year, Shannon lost 53 pounds, reaching her goal weight of 134 pounds. More importantly, she regained her strength, confidence, and belief in what her body could do.

When asked what made the biggest difference, Shannon keeps it simple: start where you are. Find the foods that fuel your body, be mindful of portions, and don’t underestimate the power of simply moving—even if it’s just a short walk. Those small, consistent choices added up to life-changing results.

Shannon credits Tracy and Brett for all the invaluable moral support they gave over the course of this journey - the many ups and downs of it. Being there to listen, guide and support will be something she’s forever grateful for.

Today, Shannon is looking ahead to new adventures, including hiking Mt. LeConte and conquering the Manitou Incline in 2027.

We’re incredibly proud of her determination and grateful to have been part of her amazing accomplishments.
